Abstract

Owing to significant declines in contract manufacturing orders from Motorola, Sony Ericsson, and Nokia, Taiwanese feature phone shipment volume dropped approximately 21.8% sequentially in the third quarter of 2009, arriving at about 9.14 million units. Among the three major clients, Motorola has only ordered the shipment of two new models in the second half of 2009, while Sony Ericsson's new models will not be shipped until early 2010. At the same time, as the market share of Nokia's CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) models in North America has not seen significant improvement, manufacturing orders originally sourced to Taiwanese makers have been encroached upon by Chinese EMS (Electronics Manufacturing Service) provider BYD as well. As a result, Taiwanese makers' feature phone shipments have been on continuous decline. In terms of ASP (Average Selling Price), nevertheless, thanks to the increased share of 3G model shipments for Qisda and IAC as well as the launch of Motorola's mid-range new models in the second half, Taiwanese feature phone ASP grew to around US$48 in the third quarter.
